Where we stand

The Hawai’i Health Department reported 22 new cases of COVID-19 today. Nineteen cases are reported on Oahu, and three are on Hawaii Island. The number of deaths remains at 22.

Hawai’i Attorney General Clare Connors filed a lawsuit in state Circuit Court on Monday against the e-cigarette company JUUL and its parent firm.

The Hawaii Health Department announced 9 new cases of COVID-19 today. Seven cases are on Oahu and two on Maui. Oahu's case count stands at 659, Maui County's at 125, Hawaii County's at 87 and Kauai's at 38. A total of 17 residents were diagnosed outside of Hawaii.

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — A bill aimed at raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco and electronic smoking devices has stalled in the state House of Representatives.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Vaping products, one of the fastest-growing segments of the legal marijuana industry, have taken a hit from consumers as public health experts scramble to determine what's causing a mysterious and sometimes fatal lung disease among people who use e-cigarettes.

Hawaii officials are calling on local health care providers to report any cases of patients with lung injuries after vaping. The advisory coincides with national reports of a breathing ailment linked to the vaping devices, including one death in Illinois possibly caused by e-cigarette use.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, in Honolulu for a medical convention, raised alarms earlier this week about the heavy use of e-cigarettes by Hawaii’s youth. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranks Hawaii number two among states for children grades 6 to 12 who are vaping. Hawaii's e-cigarette usage by its youngsters is double the average for the country as a whole.

Hawaii lawmakers killed a proposal that would have banned flavored electronic smoking devices and e-liquids, saying they suspected teenagers would continue to get the products online even if sales were prohibited.

Eighty students from six different islands rallied at the state Capitol on Wednesday to protest the high rates of teen vaping seen in Hawaiʻi's schools. According to the Hawaiʻi Public Health  Insititute, one in four Hawaiʻi middle school students has tried an e-cigarette device.

The Food and Drug Administration has told top makers of popular vaping devices they have 60 days to come up with a plan to keep their flavored products away from teenagers or face removal from the market. In Hawai'i, the problem is even more rampant than on the mainland — especially among young people. And statistics show that Hawaii Island has the highest youth vaping rate in the state.
