Since the recording of this show didn't exactly land on Thanksgiving, I'm going to revive an old playlist of songs that I play when I cook. Most of it was taken from a mix I made for HPR in 2017. Hopefully you can use it to soundtrack your kitchen!  There's also a companion mix for dinner.

Despite recommendations to the contrary by federal health authorities, millions of Americans plan to travel for Thanksgiving, with their numbers dipping only slightly from 2019 levels.

Thanksgiving usually kicks off a season of increased generosity.  Social service agencies notice an uptick in volunteers as Christmas approaches, and people who want to make a contribution wonder how to be most useful. Here are recommendations from a professional who knows the value of contributing to a cause.

Bridging the Gap ~ November 28th ~ Do The Mashed Potato

Nov 28, 2019

Happy Thanksgiving! Through a track list comprising mainly of jazz and soul (the kind of music I like to listen to when I'm digging in to my Turkey Day spread) and a few wild cards thrown in at the end, we'll be ringing in the holiday with no shortage of songs with titles that evoke thanks, gratitude and, most importantly, food.

Since it's the night before Thanksgiving, I'm putting together this show about gratitude, love, and (of course) turkey.

Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, or have alternate ways of spending the holiday, it's always a good time to reflect on the things we can be grateful for. For tonight's episode, I combed through and pulled together a playlist of mele that contain the word "mahalo" in it along with a few that were written as a mahalo.

This show also pushes us to examine what "mahalo" really means. It does not simply fit into the english translation of "thanks" and "gratitude." Through these mele we see that "mahalo" connotates notions of admiration, aloha, and reverence.

Emergency service officials are reminding residents to be safe this holiday season – especially when cooking.

Being the day before Thanksgiving cooking... or at least making a few sides is on the minds of many people. So I'm going to fill tonight's show with music from the Hawaii Public Radio cooking mix that was released yesterday.  Expect tasty tunes to inspire your culinary skills.

Ku'uwehi Hiraishi

We are less than a day away from Thanksgiving, and if you’re a conscious consumer, you’re preparing that mindful holiday meal. Is it all locally-sourced? Did you meticulously calculate portions to eliminate waste? Perhaps you went vegan? In Hawai‘i, an increased awareness of our food choices is also giving way to a raised consciousness about this American holiday and what it means. HPR’s Kuʻuwehi Hiraishi has this story.

Tonight on Bridging the Gap, a set to cure those post-Thanksgiving blues and food coma.

This Thanksgiving, some families will be getting a side of politics alongside their turkey and mashed potatoes. That’s because this year’s holiday comes on the heels of a particularly divisive election. HPR’s Molly Solomon got some tips from a professional on how to best manage divided feelings at the dinner table.

When it comes to Thanksgiving traditions, nothing is more local than a turkey served up imu-style. Last night hundreds of birds were placed in underground ovens, called imus. They steam overnight on hot lava rocks, covered with layers of banana leaf. And as HPR’s Molly Solomon reports, the results are delicious!

The traditional Thanksgiving dinner holds a different meaning here in the islands. Turkey baked in an imu could share table space with a plate of kalbi short ribs. And as families across the state get ready for the holiday, we checked in with local residents to hear what a Hawai‘i Thanksgiving means to them.
