LANSING, Mich. — Democrats were quick to back working-class United Auto Workers in their strike against General Motors, delivering doughnuts and holding picket signs outside factories to show solidarity. It's a union they long have aligned with politically.

Millions of people around the world are taking part in the Global Climate Strike. It’s been organized by international networks of young people, and young people in Hawai‘i are right on top of it.

It’s been one week since 8,000 workers at Marriott Hotels walked out on strike in eight cities around the country. Here in Hawai‘i, 2,700 workers are on the picket lines outside five hotels managed by Marriott and owned by Kyo-Ya.  They are demanding higher wages, protections against sexual harassment, and guarantees about not being replaced by automation.
