Singer, songwriter Maryanne Ito is a single mother of two, and she was serious about her full time insurance career, when her debut album reached #4 on the U.K. Soul Chart. That was 2014. Five years later, HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports the Hawai‘i-based singer is back from a smash tour of Japan, and ready to release her latest album.

A year ago, Hawai‘i Opera Theatre was adjusting to the abrupt departure of its executive director, and a debt of about $2 million. It cancelled one production this season, but a new leader is in place, and the season closer has all the makings of a hit.

Baritone Quinn Kelsey is in demand in New York, Rome, London, Paris, and more.  He’s known for the rich quality of his voice, and a magnetic stage presence, both qualities he discovered and developed growing up in Hawai‘i.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports Kelsey is a prime example of successfully leveraging local opportunities.

Traditional grand opera is comically characterized by big violent scenes and jumping from great heights, but more recently especially, introspective, psychological operas are winning new audiences.  Hawai‘i Opera Theatre’s latest production, Three Decembers, could do just that.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports the production will bring one of opera’s most beloved performers to four Hawaiian Islands.

Quinn Kelsey left Hawai‘i thirteen years ago to tackle a winding and often treacherous road to success in the rarified world of international opera.  Last year, the New York Times called Kelsey a “superb young baritone” in the run up to his astonishing Beverly Sills Award commendation from the Metropolitan Opera.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports, he’s home to share the fruits of his progression.

Jimmy Borges has spent a lifetime singing his way from Kalihi valley through many of the top venues in America, from San Francisco’s Hungry I to New York’s Latin Quarter, and many cities abroad as well.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports Borges saved up his favorite material for his just-released CD.

Jimmy Borges performs with the Hawai‘i Pops, some of those original Sinatra arrangements, this coming Saturday .

There’s a young singer in town who’s being picked up in South America, South Africa, Japan, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa caught up with Maryanne Ito at one of her favorite downtown lunch spots, Fresh Café, for a chat about the music.
