This week workers at Marriott hotels are on strike. Here in Hawaii that includes the Sheraton Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, and the Sheraton Maui. Among demands regarding compensation, the strikers are seeking guarantees about job security as the hospitality industry begins to embrace automation.

Today on Bytemarks Cafe, the winners from the VEX robotics championships will share what goes on behind the scenes of their robotics program. We’ll also explore the diversity of learning experiences it provides, from engineering to public speaking.

First we'll cover some local science and tech stories, then we'll speak with David Ulrich about the PNM Photography in Hawaii contest. Then we'll have Kathleen Cabral tell us about the annual LCC Geek Day. Finally, we'll learn about an underwater robotics program called SeaPerch. We've invited Coast Guard organizer LCMD Andy Goshorn and the team from Wahiawa Elementary.

The 2014 International Robotics Summer Games will take place this weekend at the Hawaii Convention Center.

The event will gather more than 100 high school teams from around the world to compete in robotic and engineering games. In addition to the international teams there will also be over forty schools from Hawaii in the competition.  The event is sponsored by Friends of Robotics Hawaii and it’s designed to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or “STEM” programs in early education.

Teams from Hawaii have done well in recent years when it comes to high school competitions in robotics. Next month, the Hawaii Convention Center will host a three-day robotics competition. This past week, robots were the focus of a different kind of gathering in Hong Kong. HPR’s Bill Dorman has more in today’s Asia Minute.
