Hawai'i County Ban on Polystyrene Takes Effect

For Hawai’i County residents, one thing about plate lunch is changing today: the plate. A ban on polystyrene -- commonly known as Styrofoam -- takes effect on the Big Island. The law, passed in 2017, limits the use of polystyrene by food purveyors.

HILO — Officials on the Big Island are considering a bill to loosen restrictions on plastics used by restaurants and other food vendors.

Two House committees heard impassioned testimony yesterday from residents and local businesses on bills that would ban various plastic and polystyrene containers.

First it was Maui County then Hawaiʻi County, and now the State is considering a ban on polystyrene food containers. Similar bans have been passed in cities and counties across the country, but this could make Hawaiʻi the first state to do so. HPR Reporter Kuʻuwehi Hiraishi has this story.

The use of plastic bags and polystyrene foam food containers continues to be a matter of controversy across the islands. Last week, the Maui County Council voted unanimously to ban the use of polystyrene containers by the end of next year. That same issue is also a political debate across the Pacific.   Maui wants to take the lead in banning one-time use polystyrene products. And there's a bill before the County Council to do just that.
