Maui Fires 100% Contained, Air Quality Slowly Improving

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino announced on Monday morning that 100% of both Maui wildfires, which burned a combined total of 9,200 acres, have been contained. Officials also say that air quality in Central and South Maui have improved since late Sunday.

Rain, wind and flooding on Maui have put extra pressure on the homeless.  Authorities say, some take advantage of shelters, but they aren’t sure what the majority do.  Ad hoc living spaces on the island run the gamut from a tarp to tents to shacks with electricity and wifi.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa took a tour recently with a Maui social worker. 

Maui Development Plans Rejected

Plans for further development on South Maui have been rejected at least for the moment. The latest proposal would have included housing, office and retail space on 75 acres in North Kīhei. We get more on what comes next from Colleen Uechi of the Maui News.
