Hawaii’s housing shortage now has a number — nearly 66,000 housing units are needed over the next ten years. What happens next? We get more from Pacific Business News Editor in Chief A. Kam Napier.

According to the state department of business, economic development and tourism – Hawaii needs a massive home building campaign just to catch up with the natural demand of a steadily growing population.  Statewide, the number is nearly 66,000.  On Oahu, almost 26,000 housing units will be needed by 2025.

  Currently, the average sales price of a home on O‘ahu is 974 thousand dollars, up 11% from a year ago--- for a condo, the average price is 398 thousand, up 8%.  Meanwhile, Hawai‘i’s population is increasing by about 29 new residents a day, and housing has not kept up.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa offers this look at real estate on O‘ahu over the past year.

The Hawai’i Housing Finance and Development Corporation estimates the state needs more than 30,000 affordable “for-sale units” or rentals to meet current demand. One state-backed venture in Kaka’ako, in the heart of O’ahu’s construction boom, is nearly half way to being completed. HPR’s Wayne Yoshioka reports.

The Symphony Honolulu is the newest luxury condominium that will be built on the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapi’olani Boulevard across from the Neal Blaisdell Center. In less than a week, the developer has sold nearly 70% of the units being offered for sale to the public. Many real estate agents say the market is on the verge of exploding due to low inventory and pent up demand. HPR’s Wayne Yoshioka got one family’s perspective during a Symphony Honolulu purchase.
