The Honolulu City Council on Monday unanimously approved Bill 89 that would implement stiffer regulations for short-term vacation rentals. A related, but conflicting measure, Bill 85, also passed, although with two fewer votes. The two proposals next go to Mayor Kirk Caldwell for action.

After months of debate, the Honolulu City Council was poised yesterday to approve new rules that would have restricted short-term rentals on Oahu. But after more than eight hours of public comment and deliberation, councilmembers sent two proposals back to committee for revisions.

On Saturday, April 13th the voters of Honolulu City Council District 4 will decide who they want to represent them in local government.  The special election is between Tommy Waters and Trevor Ozawa. The Hawaii Supreme Court invalidated the November election results after a close margin of 22 votes.

The long-simmering dispute between Honolulu’s taxi companies and ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft came to a head yesterday with Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s veto of Bill 35, a measure that would have regulated so-called “surge pricing” by rIde-sharing companies and made them subject to increased regulation.
