The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced new rules that help clear the way for commercial cultivation of hemp in the country, Hawaii  included.

More than half of hemp crops cultivated in Hawaii in the past year were unusable due to high THC levels, officials said.

WAILUKU — Former Major League Baseball All-Star Shane Victorino has announced a partnership agreement between his Hawaii cannabis business and a California-based hemp business, a report said.

It's illegal in Hawaii to manufacture, distribute or sell products containing cannibidiol or CBD but that hasn't stopped businesses from setting up shop in the islands. The state Health Department has taken the approach to educate retailers before it starts to fine them in the face of CBD industry’s rapid growth.

Gov. David Ige announced vetoes of 18 bills passed in 2019, including one that would have loosened the restrictions on growing hemp in Hawaii. Farmers are frustrated, but the governor says patience is required to stay in line with federal rules.

It’s been a big week for agriculture in the state: the island’s last sugar plantation announced plans to close this year. But one state lawmaker sees an opportunity for a different kind of crop. HPR’s Molly Solomon explains.
