When Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Steven Kealoha Wong as Hawai‘i’s first Poet Laureate, he handed Kealoha a mission for the next year: promote writing, reading, and the appreciation of poetry among Hawai‘i’s people. Seven years later, Kealoha’s crafted a multimedia theatre production that’s a creation story for today.

The Hawaiian Islands are getting a taste of Ireland this week.

For more than nineteen-years, Lúnasa has been one of Ireland’s most visible musical exports.  Their music blends traditional Celtic instruments like fiddles and tin whistles with a non-traditional rhythm section of double bass and guitar.  During their three island tour they’re joined onstage by bluegrass artist Tim O’Brien who will add a feel of Americana to their sound.  Kevin Crawford plays flute and tin whistle in the band.

The venerable Hawai‘i Theatre has been through a lot since opening as the “Pride of the Pacific” in 1922.   Vaudeville acts gave way to movies, then a closure in 1984.  The theatre’s reopening in 1996 after a 32 million dollar renovation has always held great promise, and HPR’s Noe Tanigawa found a new theatre president is reorganizing with an eye to the future.

Next up at the Hawai‘i Theatre, Kuana Torres Kahele on  February 7, Hālau I Ka Wēkiuʻs annual concert February 8, and blues singer Eric Bibb, February 13.
