The state of Hawai‘i has the most ambitious renewable energy goals in the country—with a goal of using 100-percent renewable energy by the year 2045.   A major concern of Hawai'i County residents is the loss of electric power because of the lava flow.  Hawaiian Electric Company (HELCO) says it is committed to providing power to lower Puna, no matter what.   They’re working on several options.   HPR’s Sherry Bracken explains one.

  Researchers in Hawaii are planning more studies this year on geothermal energy. Right now, the only working geothermal projects are on the Big Island. But Maui and parts of Oahu are also under review for potential exploration. Geothermal energy is also a topic of interest in Japan…and government officials are extending that interest to Africa. Robert Harris is the Director of the Sierra Club Hawaii Chapter. He grew up in Kailua, attended UH from undergraduate days through law school. He serves on several boards and commissions, including the Hawaii State Bar Association and says if necessary, his organization will take the Ho'opili Koa Ridge case all the way to the Hawaii Supreme Court.
