All young men between the ages of 18 and 26 living in the United States are required to register with the Selective Service. That databse is maintained should Congress ever reauthorizes a military draft. There are serious and often irreversible consequences for men who fail to sign up before they turn 26.

Don Benton is the Director of the Selective Service System. He was in Hawaii recently to talk about the lifelong consequences of NOT registering. But he also wanted to celebrate one of our islands that is on the verge of making history. Don Benton spoke with HPR’s Ryan Finnerty about why registration is still required.

  January will mark five years since 27,000 gallons of fuel leaked out of a massive underground facility at Red Hill and we still don’t know where it all went. We are hoping it doesn’t migrate to an aquifer which supplies a portion of Honolulu’s drinking water. Members of the Senate’s Red Hill task force were set to meet tomorrow morning to talk about the condition of fuel tanks. But we’ve just learned that the meeting has been postponed. We sat down with Navy facilities commanding officer Marc Delao yesterday afternoon.
