Zero Waste Initiative Follow Up: Ku’ulei Williams

Weeks ago today, HPR’s spring pledge drive came to a successful end. For several reasons the drive was different this time around, including a concerted effort by staff and volunteers to limit trash, use real plates, cups and flatware - and to redistribute unused and still good food. Ku’ulei Williams helped us with that last part. She’s the executive director of Aloha Harvest and is on our studio this morning to grade us on our zero waste initiative.

Storyteller Margaret Read MacDonald

Some of the best stories are the ones that have been around forever -- folktales that have no single, traceable author. Maybe the embellishments that different storytellers have added down through the years make the stories even better -- but for whatever reason, the fascination endures. Margaret Read MacDonald is a storyteller who has based much of her world-traveling career on folktales, and she’s setting out on a Hawaii tour with a show called “Fat Cats, Magical Roosters, and Pesky Fairies.”

Signing of Paris Agreement: Anu Hittle

Today is Earth Day and with no coincidence, it’s also the day the Paris Agreement on climate change is signed.  Visiting scholar AnuHittle was in Paris during the negotiations late last fall with a group of students from Washington University in St. Louis. With the signing of the agreement today, she’s asking two questions: —what does the agreement really mean for climate change? And aside from buying the world a little time, what is the agreement’s importance?

Haleakala Nat’l Park Anniversary: Natalie Gates

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Haleakala National Parks are in the centennial year, as is the Park Service itself, and they’re spending the entire year in celebration. The theme of the year at Haleakala National Park is “Gifts From Our Elders,” in tribute to the contributions past generations have made to the park, and Natalie Gates, Superintendent the Park, is on the line from there.
