  Honolulu Zoo’s Loss of Accreditation: City Councilmember Trevor Ozawa

Money is often at the heart of woes for City agencies...and that reason showed up again last week when the Honolulu Zoo failed to win accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The lack of consistent funding coupled with high turnover in management means the Zoo will have to wait a year before it can again attempt accreditation. So meanwhile, what’s the plan? Honolulu City Councilmember Trevor Ozawa is the Chair of the Executive Matters & Legal Affairs Committee and joins us.

Maui County Community Organic Farmland Initiative: Bruce Douglas

On Maui, a citizen’s initiative is looking to gather steam. At issue is whether large agriculture parcels now owned as commercial enterprises should instead be used for community food- producing benefit with small, diversified organic farms. If the initiative gets enough voter signatures, it could wind up on the November ballot. The group is proposing a law that would create a mechanism to allow Maui County to acquire the land through eminent domain. Although members of the Community Organic Farmland Initiative say they are not specifically targeting the H C & S lands soon to be out of business, that fact is an undeniable force. Joining us now is the organization's spokesperson, Bruce Douglas.

It’s a notion that has special resonance in Hawaii, and a new art exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art School looks at the way contact shapes our lives and our art. Herman Pi‘ikea Clark is one of the curators of “Foreign and Familiar” at the Honolulu Museum of Art School, and he’s with us this morning.
