The Conversation: Homelessness Outreach on Oahu

Noe Tanigawa

Frustration is growing in some communities across the state at finding solutions to deal with the homeless population that suffers from severe mental illness. The issue triggered a series of meetings on the West side of Hawaii island this summer attended by about a hundred people many business owners. Some have suggested turning to citizen’s arrests out of exasperation with the response by officials to deal with their complaints. We focused on those issues in a previous call-in show. Today we take a closer look at the problem on Oahu...what’s the snapshot in your neighborhood. Do you think things have gotten better, or worse?

Today in our studio we invited

  • Lt. Governor Josh Green who this summer went across the islands to see first hand what our communities are dealing with when it comes to the chronically homeless.

  • Marc Alexander, is Executive Director of the city’s Office of Housing which has been working to  coordinate efforts to deal with the homeless crisis across Oahu.

  • and Connie Mitchell, with the Executive Director of the Institute for Human Services and Chair of Partners in Care, the Oahu continuum of Homeless providers.
