Wahiawa General Hospital Update: Rep. Marcus Oshiro

What’s the value of a community hospital? That was the central question during the last legislative session about a hospital with a long history on Oahu’s North Shore. Wahiawa General had already been sliced and diced, losing certain units and many jobs. Hospital supporters had asked for 6 million dollars over two years to continue the restructuring to keep the hospital open and able to treat 20 thousand people annually. In the end, it received 2.5 million dollars from lawmakers but now four months later, what is the future looking like for Wahiawa General?

Are Public Universities Still Affordable? Dan Meisenzahl

University of Hawaii students returned to class this week paying more for their tuition than students paid a decade ago...an average of 4 thousand dollars more. They’re not much different from public college students across the country. A ProPublica study out yesterday shows that from 2000 to 2014, the average cost of in-state tuition and fees for public American colleges rose 80 percent. At the same time, the median American household income dropped by 7 percent. While Hawaii’s tuition hike doesn’t place it in the top 10 public colleges which have dramatically increased tuition, it’s still a daunting situation for families whose household income has remained veritably flat. We called UH spokesperson Dan Meisenzahl
