The U.S. Presidential Nominating

You may already be paying close attention to the 2016 presidential campaign, but maybe not quite yet. For most people, it’s after the two party conventions when the real campaign begins. And trying to figure out what’s going on can get confusing, not because there is too little information but because there is too much. Add in your own predisposition and biases, and analyzing the barrage of information gets more complicated —more heat than light.

Musical theater will always provide a refuge from reality, just when we need that refuge most. Mamma Mia!, the feel-good show based on the songs of ABBA, offers the kind of respite from the nightly news the world needs more of these days, with sing-along songs and the comfortable feeling, throughout the show, that we’re headed for a happy ending. KimeeBalmilero, director of the Diamond Head Theater production of the show, is in charge of keeping it all afloat.

They are not going to say we told you so - well at least, not in those words. All through the process of vetting the now defunct NextEra deal, opponents have said the merger would not have been in the public interest. Now the coalition comprised of interveners in the PUC docket, lawmakers and clean energy advocates have their own work cut out for them as they look at cohesive options to meet Hawaii’s 2045 renewable energy standard. And with Hawaiian Electric now saying it’s not seeking suitors, the big question is how will HECO fit in to Hawaii’s energy future? Rep Chris Lee is here with the coalition’s vision.

Great Wall of China

Bianca Dukesherer is a 2013 St. Francis School graduate who has come back from a world tour that has helped her focus on a mission for her life. Her destinations of choice weren’t necessarily about having fun; she went to 14 countries, and got a good look at the poverty and inequality that still affect much of the world -- from the Mekong Delta to China, South Africa and Myanmar.
