We all have been raised with the idea that ours is a representative government: formed, for better or worse, by the decisions we make at the ballot box… the root premise being that voters are reasonably rational and well-informed. It’s a comforting notion but, as recent events have made us wonder -- is it accurate? Contributing Editor Neal Milner has been reading a new study that suggests that the fundamental theories of democratic government have a powerful antagonist: human behavior. Have you ever been talking with someone and they tell you that you have just one minute to get your message across? Well, that challenge has been taken to a whole new level with our next guest. Dominic D’Andrea is the producing artistic director of the One Minute Play Festival, America’s largest and longest running grass roots theater company. He has led over 70 one minute play festivals around the country and is here to direct this 2nd Annual Honolulu event.

Tsunami Threat to Hawaii: Dr. Rhett Butler
Tsunamis are among the least understood, and therefore among the most frightening, of natural disasters. Hawaii, as people here have been reminded again and again throughout our history, is especially vulnerable. Dr. Rhett Butler of the UH School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology is the lead author of new study that creates a mathematical model for the probability of a devastating tsunami that would be triggered by a magnitude 9-point-oh earthquake in the Aleutian Islands.

“Beyond the Woman”: Colleen Sullivan
Storytelling is an art as old as humanity, and in sharing our individual experiences, we help the collective whole of all of us to gain insight, learn, and in the process, we heal ourselves as well. Local author Colleen Sullivan was challenged by her friend and fellow author Dina, to share her life and times as an artist, intuitive, reiki master, and more, and publish her first work in the collective book “Beyond the Woman”. Her chapter entitled, “Perceptions of Reality” follows her path to a spiritual transformation, and how that life changing event might have something to teach all of us.
