The Future of Wahiawa General; HTC Production of "Othello"; Scots in Hawaii
Wahiawa General in Danger of Closing: Rep. Marcus Oshiro
The story of Wahiawa General Hospital’s quest to stay open took a turn last week. A proposal for the state to purchase the hospital’s parking lot land is the latest idea to meet the hospital’s request for 3 million annually for the next two years. Why the central Oahu facility needs the money has a lot to do with the shifting medical landscape over the last decade, and the population of the areas the hospital serves. Many are on Medicare or Medicaid. With the Senate set to vote on the budget tomorrow, will there be help for Wahiawa General Hospital?

HTC’s Young Actor’s Ensemble, Othello: Eden Lee Murray
William Shakespeare, gone now these 400 years, is probably the most infinitely adaptable artist who ever lived. His stories can be altered in time, place, and gender, his texts can be edited ruthlessly, but his universal themes somehow always find their way to the audience. Othello is one of his most accessible plays, because issues like love and trust, race, and jealousy, the green-eyed monster, haven’t gone away. Eden-Lee Murray is directing a new production of Othello for the Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble
Nineteenth Century Hawaii drew people from all over the world, sowing the seeds of the hybrid culture we have today. Billy Kay is a Scotsman who’s fascinated by the way his people found their way to unlikely corners of the world, down through the centuries…. He’s a BBC Scotland writer and presenter who has been in Hawaii this week conducting interviews for a documentary radio series called “the Scottish World.”
Intro Music: Scotland by Dario Marianelli
Outro Music: Feeling Ok by Best Coast
