For years now, Kakaako has been a focal point of community attention to Oahu development. The transformation of the area and the controversies surrounding it have churned residents, lawmakers, developers, and the state agency in charge of shepherding Kakaako’s changes, the Hawaii Community Development Authority. Last month, the HCDA announced the retirement of its executive director, Anthony Ching. Before he leaves at the end of the year, we wondered what benediction he might offer after his turbulent tenure.

In its earliest stages, a theatrical production is still a gleam in the eye of its author and director, and it’s interesting to look at a show from that early stage and see where it goes.   In March, KumuKahua will present a new original work by Eric Yokomori called Pelicans. Its director is TaurieKinoshita and she’s holding open auditions for the play, as well as running a free audition workshop tomorrow. Open auditions for the play will be held this Saturday and Sunday at KumuKahua Theater in downtown Honolulu, and there will be a free audition workshop held from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. The play will run from March 24th to April 24th, 2016.

Say “December,” and thoughts of sugar plums and candles often come unbidden. But December also marks a civic holiday that those who fight for its purpose would remind you to stop and consider. Today marks 224 years since the ratification of the Bill of Rights. The first ten amendments to the Constitution and the freedoms they provide are the bedrock of American birthright and while many people are quick to point to them to justify their perspectives and actions, few actually remember about the day they were collectively adopted over two centuries ago. To rectify that, Liam Skilling joined The Conversation for a discussion. Skilling is an Associate Faculty Specialist, as well as the Director of the Evening Part Time Program and Academic Success at Richardson Law School.

The Goodnight Gecko

Sometimes you just have to face your fears. If you learn how to do that when you’re very young, life can get a lot easier.   For the last 25 years, a lot of kids have had their fear of the dark soothed by having Goodnight Gecko read to them.   Gill McBarnet’s book has been around just that long, and the author is celebrating with a live reading of one of Hawaii’s most popular children’s books. She joined The Conversation via phone to talk about the book’s legacy and the upcoming reading, which takes place at the Maui Ocean Center this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
