Yesterday we got a call from an upset Big Island resident, Joe Gaynor. He said he and his wife spent Thanksgiving in Kona and in chatting with 11 families staying at the hotel, 10 had heard nothing about dengue fever. Hardly a scientific sample, we know, but to him it was unsettling, especially as the families had arrived from the US, Canada, England, and Japan. He also said many officials’ offices he called told him the same thing… “We’re doing our best.” That ended with a conversation with Big Island Senator and physician Josh Green, who joined The Conversation via phone to share his thoughts and give an update.

In Paris, the international climate change summit continues. Contributing Editor Neal Milner has had a look at some new research that says we shouldn’t be surprised if the world uniting in a goal to hold global warming at bay may not be realistic. Milner joined the show to talk about the research and its implications.

Every time we see our violinist friend Duane Padilla he has learned a new instrument. In recent years that has included guitar, ukulele, and lap steel guitar. He just released a Christmas recording that made him an ideal guest to kick off our holiday live music series, in which we bring in some of our compatriots to re-work some holiday tunes. Padilla joined the show to tell us all he wants for Christmas. You can hear his arrangement of All I Want for Christmas here.

Homeless Housing Update: Scott Morishige
State homelessness coordinator Scott Morishige announced that a temporary transitional shelter is now under construction in Kakaako. It’s temporary for both the people it will serve (no more than a 90 day stay is allowed) and in its lifespan, said to be about 2 years. The facility will be a rehabbed 5,000 square foot maintenance shed and the Governor’s team has said it hopes to replicate the Kakaako model. So what does the latest step in kakaako mean for other homeless hotspots in Oahu and around the state? Scott Morishige joined The Conversation to elaborate.

Waianae Harbor Homeless Sweep: Cedric Gates
As work on the Kakaako temporary shelter continues, the Waianae community is considering what it would like to see happen with its large and well established homeless encampment, The Harbor. Cedric Gates chairs the Waianae Coast Neighborhood Board and joined the show via phone to comment.

Handel’s Messiah is a holiday staple for many, and we tend to think of productions of this great oratorio as massive undertakings, with as many voices and instruments as can fit on a stage. But it’s originally a chamber work, and the Maui Chamber Orchestra, along with the Maui Masterworks Chorale, will take us closer to the composer’s original intention with its upcoming performance. Musical director Robert Wills joined the show to take us inside preparations for the concert. The Maui Chamber Orchestra’s winter concert, which will include a performance of Handel’s Messiah with the Maui Masterworks Chorale, takes place at the Iao Theater in Wailuku on Saturday, December 19th at 7:30 p.m. and the following day, Sunday, at 3 p.m.
