Recession's Impact on Charitable Giving: Tom Kelly
A few weeks ago, Giving USA came out with its annual report. It showed charitable giving had grown to $358.4 billion last year. The data compiled by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the Giving USA Foundation of Chicago got a lot of attention from those in philanthropy as it was the first time annual giving had surpassed pre-recession levels. We wondered how much that translated into greater charitable dollars within Hawaii and where those dollars went. We asked Tom Kelly, Vice President of Knowledge, Evaluation, and Learning for the Hawaii Community Foundation for his take.

New Self-Titled Album: Tim Rose
As veteran record producer Quincy Jones reminded us just last week, the music industry we once knew is broken, and is unlikely to come back. That doesn’t mean the music stops, though… it just means a new generation has to use YouTube videos, a website, self-produced CD’s, lots of touring, etc. to reach the public with its music. Singer-songwriter Tim Rose is taking that path and he joined us in our studio for a chat and a brief performance.

Homeless Issues Not Being Discussed: Scott Morishige
Homelessness got a lot of attention this week. It started with a meeting of service providers in a quandary over what to do about Kaka’ako. The tents have mushroomed to just shy of 200 and about a third of the homeless folks in the encampment are families with kids who wouldn’t be welcome at the proposed Sand Island shelter. Then there was the HCDA meeting mid week, with Kaka’ako businesses and the UH Medical school equally as concerned for the health and safety of their customers and staffs. There were a lot of exchanges, but something was missing according to Scott Morishige, Executive Director of community group PHOCUSED.

Hawaiian Feathered Friends Network: Melissa Bayles
Honolulu City Council Bill 51 is now in effect, and that’s a concern to bird owners throughout the city. Those with ten or more birds will be required to get a permit and get the permission of two-thirds of their neighbors to keep them. What happens if they don’t? Members of the Hawai‘i Feathered Friends Network say the birds are likely to be released into the wild, and that’s bad news for everybody. Melissa Bayles is a co-founder of the organization, and she joined us in our studios to talk about the new law and its potential effect.
