Current Issues on Molokai: Catherine Cluett
Catherine Cluett is editor of The Molokai Dispatch, the island's only newspaper. Originally from a small town in rural New Hampshire, she moved to Hawaii seven years ago for what was supposed to be a short-term position at the Dispatch. Molokai quickly became home, and Catherine continues to enjoy living and working on the island. With the support of community, the Dispatch is now preparing to celebrate it's 30th anniversary.

What do artists do all day? We’re familiar with their finished products, but most of us don’t know all that much about their process. We see the art without getting to know the craft behind it – whether it’s painting, sculpture, ceramic art, or any of the other means of expression to channel the creative impulse. Starting this weekend, the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Spalding House is opening its doors to the public for nine days of hands-on demonstrations and workshops to take us beyond the veil. Spalding House Director Aaron Padilla joined the show to tell us more.

Since your school days, you’ve probably liked holidays. Holidays have changed over the years with some bundled together for convenience sake. In Hawaii, 2 of the 13 on the state calendar celebrate Hawaiian history and in the future there could be more state holidays commemorating Hawaiian history. Tomorrow, the Hawaii County Council will consider a nonbinding resolution to add Restoration Day. The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs would like that… the group wants holidays traditionally celebrated in the Kingdom of Hawaii to be official holidays, with days off to celebrate. I talked with Geri Bell, President of the Hawaii Council in the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, and she favors a holiday cafeteria plan.
