Next to Normal: Director David Johnston
We associate stage musicals with light entertainment, but that’s an old construct – musicals have been taking on subjects well beyond the old moon-and-June, boy-meets-girl stories of generations past. Done right, a musical play can draw on a variety of resources to put a dramatic story across. That’s what the theatergoing public thought about the rock musical “next to normal” when it was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010. The show deals with a troubling subject: mental illness and its effect on a family. David Johnston is the director of Maui Academy of Performing Arts adaptation of the play.
