Vacation Rentals (TVRs) on the North Shore of Kauai: Justin Kollar

Sharing the experience of Hawaii can be a profitable endeavor when you already have the house, and whether legal or not, renting to tourists has implications for neighborhoods like Kauai's North Shore. Longtime residents say it's not just the character of the place that's irrevocably changed -- it's the impact on infrastructure and the potential for visitors to not necessarily get what they bargained for in accommodations or safety. And while the community grapples with its resiliency plan, Kauai prosecuting attorney Justin Kollar has to enforce transient vacation rental regulations. He joined us today by phone.

There are worse ways to spend your summer than learning a new skill, and for many people, summer is the chance to enhance their creative skill set and add some fun to their lives. Do you have dreams of being an architect? A photographer? Are you ready to delve into the world of social media? The digital age has brought so many highly specialized tools onto our desktops that we can take our pick these days. Pacific New Media offers summer classes for adults who are looking to broaden their horizons; David Ulrich is the coordinator, and he joined us this morning in the studio.

FACE Response to Mayor’s Homeless Action Plan: Drew Astolfi

How do we help the homeless and keep public areas accessible at the same time? This topic got a lot of attention last week. Flanked by HPD's chief, the state's homelessness coordinator and human services agencies, Honolulu's Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced his plan to deal with these issues.  Also last week, gubernatorial candidate Duke Aiona made a different proposal for the houseless a part of his platform. Local organization, Faith Action for Community Equity has long advocated for the homeless and been in the dialogue mix with the city and state. Executive Director Drew Astolfi was here today with his analysis of both plans.

Kachuzzi the Clown at Santa Cruz Fringe Fest: Tara Makua

Kachuzzi the clown is on her way to the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival, and it’s a perfect fit… Kachuzzi is no ordinary clown; she’s a kind of post-feminist performance-art incarnation, as challenging at times as she is funny.  She uses the clown persona to touch on the life of today’s woman, trying to be self-sufficient and live up to everyone’s expectations at the same time, and raise a question: is there a contradiction there?   Kachuzzi Presentare is with us in the person of her co-creator, Tara Mariquita Makua, who’s with us in our studio.
