WAILUKU — A solo hiker on Maui is still missing despite an ongoing search, authorities said.

Craig Pitt, 35, of Florida had not been seen since around noon Wednesday in Paia, The Maui News reported Sunday.

Pitt's vehicle was found parked on the shoulder of Maui's Hana Highway Friday, authorities said.

Maui police and fire personnel began searching the bamboo forest area Saturday, officials said.

Pitt planned to hike on one of the trails along Hana Highway, authorities said.

The 64-mile (103-kilometer) road runs near the coast in eastern Maui and connects Hana with Kahului.

Pitt is white with brown eyes and brown hair, weighs 185 pounds (84 kilograms) and is 5 feet, 11 inches (1.8 meters) tall, officials said.

Police asked members of the public not to join the hunt.

"Due to the recent rains and unsafe conditions in the area, we are asking that people refrain from searching the area until it is safe to do so," Maui Police acting spokesman Sgt. John Sang said.

The investigation remains active, police said.
