:34—Chip Davis: “Mere Image,” 1979, track 4, 6:51, Mannheim Steamroller, from “Fresh Aire III” [American Gramaphone 365]. Chip Davis plays recorder; Jackson Berkey plays harpsichord and synth. Chip Davis, now 68, is a bassoonist by training who began making the Fresh Aire albums after producing the hit song “Convoy” in 1974, cashing in on the CB radio movement of those years.

:43—Jimmy Webb: “MacArthur Park,” 1967, DISC B, track 16, 6:48 Diana Ross & the Supremes [Motown 63472]. Originally written for The Association, but rejected by them, then chosen by Richard Harris for his pop debut. Never released until “Supreme Rarities” in 2008. Jimmy Webb actually worked for Motown Records in his youth.

:45—Brian Wilson: “Good Vibrations,” early session work, 1966, track 24, from re-release of “Smiley Smile” [Capitol 31862]. The most expensive single ever produced, more than $500,000 in today’s dollars. Mike Love wrote the lyrics.

:50—Lennon-McCartney: “Eleanor Rigby,” track 6, 5:03, John Pizzarelli, guitar; Ray Kennedy, piano; Martin Pizzarelli, bass RCA Victor 61432].

:56—Mason Williams: “Baroque-a-Nova,” 1968, track 9, 2:15, from “The Mason Williams Phonograph Record” [Vanguard 137]. Produced by Mike Post, who wrote the themes to “Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order,” “Magnum P.I.,” “The Rockford Files” and “The A-Team.” He was 23 when “Classical Gas” won a Grammy.
