Helping Hand - May 30, 2014 full interview with Kahumana Community

Helping Hand airs weekly each Friday on HPR1 stations statewide on All Things Considered. Host Dave Lawrence speaks with organizations helping out people in need, and this week, we’re learning about the Kahumana Community of 4 campuses on over 50 acres on the west side of Honolulu County.

Their origins go back to 1974; among the things they offer are social programs for the homeless, disabled, including folks with developmental disabilities, young people, and others through unique programs, many based around farming and training opportunities. They are a non-profit with a very special café that is part of the picture, too, and a commercial kitchen aspect, delivering over 5000 meals a week to 35 schools, according to their website. We’ll do our best to cover as much of their valued mission as possible with our guest Tom McDonald, the Executive Director of Kahumana Community.
