Helping Hand - March 15, 2014 full interview with ATRC - Assistive Technology Resource Centers

Helping Hand is a weekly feature that airs Fridays at 5:30 on HPR1 stations across the state during HPR's afternoon drive program All Things Considered. Each Friday, HPR afternoon host Dave Lawrence puts the spotlight on an organization or event that helps folks in need in the community. This week we’re learning about the Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawai`i -- ATRC.

At their website, ATRC is described as a nonprofit whose mission is to link people with technology and empower individuals through its use, with programs geared to educate individuals with disabilities, friends and family members, professionals, institutions and anyone else interested in disabilities.  The Assistive Technology Act of 1998 is part of their mission: the act builds on its predecessor, the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (Tech Act) and affirms that technology is a valuable tool that can be used to improve the lives of Americans with disabilities.  It also affirms the federal role of promoting access to assistive technology (AT) devices and services for individuals with disabilities. ATRC is also the State of Hawai`i's designated Assistive Technology Act agency, and we’ll hear more with our guest Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong, ATRC President and CEO.
