Dealing with Abandoned & Derelict Cars

The problem of abandoned and derelict vehicle varies from island to island. On Oahu, the city secured two lots this summer to remove the junked cars off its city golf courses where the vehicles were being stored temporarily. We talked with Randy Leong, Deputy Director of the City’s Office of Customer Services, about overcoming the hurdles for clearing junked cars off city streets.  This morning on the Big Island the County Council takes up a bill to clarify what it can do to rid neighborhoods of the eyesores and safety hazards of the abandoned and derelict cars.  Councilmember Eileen O’Hara who introduced the measure explains predicament Hawaii Island’s situation.

The 11th annual Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships wrap up today in Waikiki. There are plenty of surf competitions across Hawaii – but this one is unique among them. The big difference? Many of the competitors arrive at the beach in a wheel chair. The Conversation’s Ryan Finnerty went to Waikiki Beach and brings us this report.
