Parents are often told that a loving and nurturing environment can help raise a compassionate child... and that the opposite is true- violence and abuse can lead to other violent behavior. Researchers say that one form of violence in a child’s or adult’s life can bring others. One of those researchers is Dr. Robert Geffner, a licensed clinician and the current and Founding President of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma at Alliant International University. This week his organization is sponsoring the 13th Hawaii International Summit on Preventing, Assessing & Treating Trauma Across the Lifespan.

Sadako Sasaki was a little girl growing up in Hiroshima, Japan in the years after the Second World War, her life cruelly shortened by the effects of radiation. At school, she and her friends used to fold origami cranes as an expression of her wish for a better life for everyone. Laurie Rubin has spent years working on a musical about her, to be performed by schoolchildren, called “Peace on Your Wings.” A new edition of the work will be performed this weekend as the kickoff to a world tour, and Laurie is with us this morning

It’s not an entirely new practice, but it has been growing in the art world for a couple of generations now: the appropriation of found objects and found images. Many of today’s artists deal with the bombardment of information they encounter by grabbing what they can, manipulating it in various ways, and creating something new. Margo Ray is a Hawaii Island artist who’s giving a talk today at the Hawaii State Art Museum on The Art of Collecting: Transformation of Photography and Found Imagery into an Art Practice.
