An explosive eruption before dawn this morning was yet another reminder of Kilauea’s unpredictable nature. Although Hawaii’s active volcano has been as closely observed as any in the world over the last 35 years, there’s only so much the experts can tell us about what lies ahead.  Ken Rubin, Chair of the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Hawaii Manoa, is one of those observers.

Changes at the Airport

The state is in the throes of a three billion dollar modernization project at the Honolulu airport. If you plan to travel next month, heads up! This week transportation officials announced it is changing the gate numbers, all in advance of big changes at the Daniel.K Inouye International airport.

The Peace Corps marks its 57th birthday this year. Kamaka Dias grew up in Hilo and  is now serving in Madagascar.This month he expects to contribute $3000 worth of computers thanks to a crowdsourcing effort he led. We talked to from his town off the coast of Africa. Dias said when he left the Big Island he was all fired up to change the world.He found the experience changed him.

Blues guitarist Josh Smith has been performing since he was a teenager,  but for much of his early career, he earned his bread and butter as a session musician, supporting other artists. His touring career with his trio has since taken off; he’s in Hawaii for a series of weekend performances.
