More to the Bill Banning Ivory
If you’re a parent of a kid on a sports team, you may have more than a few mementos from The Trophy House. So it might strike you you as odd that the owner whose business has no use for ivory has become an opponent of the bill to ban the ivory trade in Hawaii. Mark Carson designs watches in addition to his sports trophy business. We talked earlier and I asked him why he’d get involved with an issue that has nothing to do with his business.

Pepe Romero Junior was born into the world of guitar. He is the son of a world-renowned virtuoso who learned his craft from his father in turn. It’s a legacy he takes seriously, as the luthier who crafts instruments for his father and for local guitar and ukulele player Daniel Ho, whose new collaboration with Pepe Romero senior is called “Aloha Espana.” It is music that takes Hawaiian music back to its country of origin, one where the craft of the man who made the instruments takes center stage. Pepe Romero Junior is with us this morning.

Teresa McCreary Moonlight Serenade HPU Concert
Whatever barriers once existed between genres of music: classical, popular, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll came down some time ago, and everyone benefits. Today’s student musicians can step from one style to another at will, and generations to come are likely to be more versatile that any before them. Teresa McCreary, Director of Performing Arts at Hawaii Pacific University, is preparing a free weekend concert that will take her charges from classical to Broadway and back, and she’s with us this morning.

On Hawaii Island, the split within the community over geothermal energy is nothing new. This legislative session, it has taken another turn with a bill to clarify who will regulate geothermal development and exploration - the bill would give that authority to the state unless granted to the counties - opposition has been fierce filling much of the 140 pages of testimony from the last hearing. But what about the company that already operates the geothermal plant in Puna and as of last month, pulled out of negotiations for another project to generate an additional 25 megawatts? Michael Kaleikini is Senior Director for Hawaii Affairs for Ormat Nevada, the company which operates Puna Geothermal Venture on Hawaii Island and he s on the phone now.
