Maui Mayor shares thoughts about travel quarantine

The 14-day inter-island travel quarantine for the counties of Hawaii, Kauai and Maui went into effect today. Neighbor Island travelers to Oahu will not be affected, but will need to quarantine when they return to their home island.  Maui Mayor Mike Victorino first asked Gov. David Ige to reinstate the interisland quarantine on July 24, when the number of new positive COVID-19 cases reached a then record 60 cases. He spoke with The Conversation’s Jason Ubay about what prompted the request.

Assisting healthcare workers cope with stress

Stress is a common condition for many in these days of COVID-19. But it’s especially prevalent for front-line workers--including medical personnel. This week we’re looking at how several medical groups are addressing that challenge--and this morning we focus on Hawaii Pacific Health, which includes Straub, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children as well as Pali Momi and Wilcox Hospital on Kauai.

Alison Zecha is Leadership Development Manager for Hawaii Pacific Health, and she spoke with the Conversation’s Catherine Cruz.

Correction workers face COVID outbreak

Hawaii’s Department of Public Safety says three adult corrections officers and six inmates have tested positive for coronavirus at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.  That’s the focus of today’s reality check with our partners at Honolulu Civil Beat.  Click hereto read Kevin Dayton's story online at CivilBeat.org.

2020 Elections

Twelve weeks from today is Election Day.  While a Presidential race usually draws a lot more voter turnout than a Primary, this year's Primary Election in Hawaii marked extremely  high voter participation -- 51% in our first statewide mail-in election.

UH Outreach College offers clinical research certificate program

Who’s hiring? That’s what many people want to know in an increasingly difficult economic environment. Catherine Cruz recently spoke to the head of the University of Hawaii’s Cancer Center. Dr. Randall Holcombe says scores of very particular types of positions are available and the University of Hawaii’s Outreach College is about to offer training to help. It’s a Clinical Research Certificate Program that starts later this month.
