Hawai‘i Tourism Authority faces possible funding cuts

State lawmakers are using the pandemic to look long and hard at the way Hawai‘i operates and how it spends money. We talked to John De Fries, head of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, about the latest move  to reduce funding and restructure operations.

‘Iolani Palace seeks financial support amid pandemic

The overwhelming response to a new round of federal aid for performance venues crashed the website last week after going live. Museums were among those that could have been eligible for the recovery funds, but the fine print will likely exclude places like Iolani Palace and other small community museums. We spoke with Paula Akana, Executive Director of the Palace, about the search for support.

Civil Beat reporter Christina Jedra joined us to discuss the fatal shooting of a man in Nu‘uanu by the Honolulu Police Department. Police said he entered a home and exhibited “odd behavior” before returning to his vehicle and later assaulting three responding police officers.
