The summit area of Mauna Kea is home to 13 telescopes. If constructed, the TMT would be the largest.

State Supreme Court Hears TMT Arguments

The construction of the giant Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea has become a flashpoint for Hawaiian activists for the past several years. The long-delayed project is once again in the hands of the State Supreme Court. Arguments for and against the continuation of the $1.4 billion telescope were heard yesterday.

State Auditor Report Reveals Lack of Oversight of Law Enforcement Funding Program

To its supporters, civil asset forfeiture is a valuable tool of law enforcement, especially effective in the war on drugs. To its opponents, it is legalized theft. It’s the process by which a person’s assets can be seized when he or she is suspected of a crime. That is suspected not convicted, and therein lays the heart of the legal argument against it. A State Auditor’s report released earlier this week took the State Attorney General’s Office to task, saying the bar was set too low and that transparency and accountability were lacking.

Civil Beat Reality Check

You can learn much about an election campaign by asking who’s giving to candidates, which candidates they’re giving to, and what they might hope to get back.  In today’s Reality Check from Civil Beat, reporter Nathan Eagle tells the tale of two Bert Kobayashi's on opposite side of the Democratic Gubernatorial Primary.

Hawaii Teachers Relocate to Mainland at Record Rate

Hawaii has a well-documented problem recruiting and retaining public school teachers. At a meeting of the State Board of Education yesterday, Hawaii State Teachers Association President Corey Rosenlee revealed that teachers are now moving to the mainland at a record-setting rate. One of those teachers who recently left Hawaii is Kellee Kelly. After years of struggling to make ends meet, Kellie made the decision to move her family to the mainland. She now lives in Dallas, Texas.

UnRecorded Tales by Jeff Gere

Not only does storyteller Jeff Gere carry a thousand stories in his head, he is able to introduce variations on them in the moment, so you never hear the same story twice. Jeff is able to dip into a storytelling tradition that goes back to the first tales told around a fire, and he’s bringing Fresh Tales on an Old Tongue” to HPR’s Atherton Studio tomorrow night.
