League of Women Voters, Voter Registration: Ann Shaver

  This week, we marked the 50th anniversary of the Voter Rights Act. Today as the landmark legislation starts its 51st year, Hawaii is is also moving into a new era. The League of Women Voters has launched online voter registration. The statewide service is available through the Office of Elections, a partner in the project with the County Clerks in each of Hawaii’s counties. Ann Shaver is the president of the League of Women Voters.

Pacific Aviation Museum’s, Vietnam War: Buck Welch

Buck Welch always knew he’d be a military aviator. His father had been one in the Second World War and his son became one in the Gulf War, Buck served in Vietnam.  Each conflict brought with it a new set of rules of engagement.  Buck is in town to take part in the Pacific Aviation Museum’s Fiftieth anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War. He served as a Forward Air Controller from 1971 to 1972, and we talked with him about those days.

Chair of a Fashion Frenzy: Ashley Kierkiewicz

  Zonta International, an organization whose goal is the empowerment of women worldwide, now three generations along in Hawaii, and has honed its mission over the years to find ways to give young entrepreneurs a running start.  The Hilo club’s latest effort is aimed at developing a Hawaii Island fashion industry. And we talked about it with Ashley Kierkiewicz, the first Vice-President of the Zonta Club of Hilo and chair of a Fashion Frenzy event next weekend.
