John C. Zak

Welcome to Classical Pacific for  Thursday, September 14,  2017. Host: John Kalani Zak. Today, we’ll hear a beautiful guitar concerto by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. We’ll also hear music by Debussy, Berlioz (Harold en Italie) , Lalo, and Korngold. You’ll have a chance to guess the name of a theme from a major motion picture, so brush up on your movie trivia! And, Judy Anderson will be here to give us a preview of tonight’s Evening Concert.

Classical Pacific airs at 3 PM Hawaii time on HPR 2 - your home for classical music.

Don’t forget to vote for your favorite composer on our website, on our mobile app, or on our HPR Classical Facebook page.....we’ll count down your top ten faves during the upcoming Festive Fall Pledge Drive  which  is coming up at the end of September. If you value HPR’s programing, including music, news,  and information...why wait? Donate now.  Visit our website: hawaiipublicradio.org or use HPR’s mobile app, which is available in your app store. You can also vote for your favorite classical composer  on HPR Classical’s  Facebook page.

So, here’s a question and it’s not rhetorical one: What does music mean to you in your life?  How and when to you listen to music? And, most important, how does it make you feel? If you have some comments about this, please let me know. Send me an email through our HPR website. I might read some of the  comments on  the air and I would be quite interested to hear what you have to say!

As I mentioned some time ago, I am still looking for high-quality choral music from across Polynesia, particularly, S?moa and Tonga, and Maori music, as well. If you have access to that music and would be willing to share or to put me in contact with someone who might be able to assist in that regard, please let me know via e mail on this website or feel free to call the station (808) 955-8821 and leave me a message. And while we’re on the subject, what music from the Pacific region would you like to hear? Would you be interested in hearing more World Music, other classical artists? Any artists you especially love? Let me know!

Be sure to visit the Classical Pacific page on HPR’s website to listen to the podcast of my conversation with André Watts and Iggy Jang. If you have keiki in your life, to whom you want to introduce classical music, you will find this conversation especially interesting. You'll also find a link on this page to the podcast of The Big Ears Music Club from August 25, 2017, where John Zak and music educator, Louise King Lanzilotti italk story with a young clarinetist who recently graduated from Punahou School. Louise and John also discuss the great fun and countless learning opportunities young folks experience by taking art in musical theatre productions.
