Classical Pacific, April 26, 2018: Orchestras of the Pacific Rim 4

This week I'm featuring some of the many Pacific Rim Symphony Orchestras. I've visited the San Francisco, Seattle and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras. Today, it's back to the US and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, founded in 1919 by a copper baron, William Andrews Clark, Jr. The orchestra has developed a reputation for promoting new music and making bold, innovative choices in leadership and programming, including the hiring of its latest maestro, Gustavo Dudamel. Since we spent an entire day of the fund drive focusing on Dudamel, I won't be including any works conducted by him today. Some of its other outstanding music directors have been Artur Rodzi?ski, Otto Klemperer, Alfred Wallenstein Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, André Previn and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Leonard Slatkin* has been the conductor for many programs at the Hollywood Bowl as well.

While you're at it, don't miss a performance by our own Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. There's no comparison between a recording of an orchestra and the experience of hearing an orchestra live. This weekend, Leonard Slatkin* will be conducting the orchestra in both Pops and Masterworks concerts.

Friday, April 27, 7:30pm, Leonard Slatkin conducts the music of John Williams.

April 28 and April 29, Leonard Slatkin conducts Cindy Mc Tee's Finish Line; the Sibelius Violin Concerto, with Elina Välhälä, Violin; and Brahms Second Symphony.

For tickets, call 94 MUSIC (946-8742). Box office hours, M - F, 8:30am - 4:30pm.
