Before there was Elvis, there was Big Mama Thornton. Before there was Jerry Lee Lewis, there was Big Maybelle. And before there was The Sonics, there was Richard Berry and the Pharaohs. For tonight's program, we take a look (and a listen) at the distinctively black origins of Rock 'n' Roll - from the genres that it developed from like gospel and jump blues, to the early and lesser known black pioneers of the uptempo, fast paced sound that we know know as rock music.
