On this week's Stargazer, the week begins with the “Blood Moon,” or a moon that can turn red or orange, along with a lunar eclipse. The eclipse kicking in at 6:53pm tonight, but not something we can really see until around 8pm. Also in store: prime viewing around the clock, plus we learn about a unique kind of observation coming up at the Mauna Kea summit this week as we connect with Christopher Phillips at the Imiloa Astronomy Center.
As for tonight and our Blood Moon, reports about observing the phenomena indicate the eclipse should start shortly before 8pm, and be complete between about 9 and 10:30. Following that, Stargazers can watch as the moon moves out of the Earth's shadow from about 10:30 to 11:30pm. Check out imiloahawaii.org for more on this topic and for events at Imiloa at UH Hilo. For folks in Honolulu County, UH Manoa Institute for Astronomy has two special events that are free and give people a chance to use their telescopes and binoculars. They are free and open to the public at Kapiolani Park and also at Kahuku Public Library. According to reports, both events are from 7 to 11:30 pm. Another option is Bishop Museum, which is going to present viewing opportunities tonight from 8 to 11:30pm.
