Maui County Mayor Suggests Building Homeless Sanctuaries

Governor David Ige’s emergency proclamation to deal with the homeless could sweep camps in Honolulu as early as next week.  1.3-million dollars was issued under the emergency proclamation – with a little less than half of that going to help the homeless situation on neighbor islands.

In Maui County - Mayor Alan Arakawa is proposing a multi-million dollar Homeless Initiative to create series of “sanctuaries” where homeless can await transitional housing.  The areas would be scattered around the island and outfitted with storage, restrooms, showers and security.  The plan also proposes changing housing regulations to create affordable rental units and anti-nuisance laws banning public defecation and intoxication.

Mayor Arakawa presented the plan to the Maui City Council to raise more funding.

Each sanctuary would house up to 100 people and cost around 1-million dollars to establish.

Nick Yee’s passion for music developed at an early age, as he collected jazz and rock records pulled from dusty locations while growing up in both Southern California and Honolulu. In college he started DJing around Honolulu, playing Jazz and Bossa Nova sets at various lounges and clubs under the name dj mr.nick. He started to incorporate Downtempo, House and Breaks into his sets as his popularity grew, eventually getting DJ residences at different Chinatown locations. To this day, he is a fixture in the Honolulu underground club scene, where his live sets are famous for being able to link musical and cultural boundaries, starting mellow and building the audience into a frenzy while steering free of mainstream clichés.
