Hawaiʻi County reports that 1,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater were released in waters off Pepeʻekeo.

The incident happened at the Kulaʻimano Wastewater Treatment Plant on Monday around 2 p.m.

Wastewater crews arrived shortly after alarms went off. They found that the water disinfection system was not working.

After securing a loose electrical relay, power was restored and the system returned to normal operations.

The system was not operational for about 18 minutes.

Warning signs have been posted at entry points to the shoreline. They will remain in place until the state Department of Health authorizes their removal.
