New Maui Sustainability Project Wants Local Input

Maui has a new sustainability initiative -- and they are asking local residents to provide input.

The Hulihia project is a joint initiative between the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College and the Kamehameha Schools' Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi Community Strategies Team.

Hulihia -- which means 'complete change' -- aims to support Maui county to make concrete sustainability plans for the future.

Jonathan Stenger is an analyst for Kamehameha Schools. He says, "This project is different from other sustainability programs because it really tries to understand the cause of the issues that we’re faced with today, as opposed to treating the symptom. It’s really focused on getting to the roots. Through sustainability and modeling, they can understand the complexities and provide a sustainable solution."

"It’s not about doing other projects, but about providing this information to the community groups who actually do these projects. So our role is really to be providing the expertise and providing the data to community groups, so they can implement the solutions that they think are best," explains Stenger.

Hulihia is encouraging locals to visit their online forum and provide feedback on what sustainability projects they should pursue.

You can do this at hulihia.consider.it.
