Honolulu Medical Examiner IDs 2nd Set Of Remains At Shooting/Fire

Catherine Cruz/HPR

The Honolulu medical examiner has identified the second set of remains at the scene of the fatal Diamond Head-area shooting and fire as Jerry Hanel. Police say Hanel shot and killed two police officers last month as they responded to a 911 call.

Neighbors described Hanel, 69,  as mentally ill and living rent-free on Hibiscus Drive. He was served with an eviction notice that may have triggered the shooting and fire, which destroyed several homes.

His identification was delayed while the medical examiner's office notified next-of-kin.
