Parts of Ala Moana, Kalakaua To Close For Mauna Kea March

Ryan Finnerty/HPR

Honolulu police say parts of  Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalakaua Avenue will close Saturday afternoon for a planned march in support of the protest on Mauna Kea.

Ala Moana in the east-bound direction will be closed at Atkinson Drive starting at 1:30 p.m. There will then be subsequent closures along Kalakaua Avenue until 5 p.m.

Organizers of the Aloha '?ina Unity March say participants will meet beginning at noon at Ala Moana Beach Park. The march then will start at 2 p.m. and end at Kapiolani Park, where a program is planned from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The march is in support of the ongoing protest against the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea on the Big Island. The protesters who call themself ki'ai or protectors of the mountain have been blocking access to the summit where construction of the telescope is planned. The protest is approaching its 13th week.

Marches on Maui, Moloka'i and Kaua'i are also planned, the organizers said in a news release.
