Director of Marketing & Communications (December 2021)

Reports to HPR President and General Manager

Full-time exempt senior staff position keeping normal Monday – Friday business office hours, with occasional weekend and evening work, as assigned and/or necessary. Typically works 40 – 50 hours per week.

Qualifications: Must have at least five years of marketing, communications, and/or social media experience in senior or management positions. Excellent writing, editing, communication, and social media skills. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing communication and marketing plans, budgeting, and adhering to deadlines. Experience in non-profit environment important, but not necessary. A listener and supporter of public radio a plus. Strong computer, new technology (as they relate to radio) and social media skills necessary, as well as some design facility. Bachelor’s degree in related field, preferred.

Description of Position

  1. Develops and implements integrated strategic communications/public relations, marketing and social media plans to support and advance Hawai‘i Public Radio initiatives, including audience and membership experience and development, programming, live events, social media, and fundraising and underwriting activities.
  2. Provides all creative direction, editing, management, and some production and delivery of all HPR internal and external communication, marketing, and social media content, including HPR’s Annual Report, media ads, e-newsletters, etc.
  3. Supports HPR local and national membership/listener events including the Atherton Studio concert series, and local and visiting national programming events.
  4. Ensures consistency and quality of HPR’s overall brand, including on-air, on-line, print publications, and written documents, either internal or external.
  5. Leads a team of digital and multimedia producers (currently two positions) in alignment with HPR’s strategic plan.

Position Duties

  • Works closely with HPR President & General Manager, Programming, Development, News and other cross-functional team members at HPR to implement company’s mission, vision, and strategic goals by the use of effective marketing, communications, and digital practices.
  • Develops communications, marketing, and social media priorities, strategies, and protocols.
  • Writes, researches, and edits communications and materials in a range of styles, formats, across multiple channels, including multi-page printed annual reports, executive communications, press releases, emails and e-newsletters, 30-second radio promotional spots, web and social media posts, and award applications.
  • Manages on-air promotional inventory, overseeing creation and production of evergreen and limited-run spots that support the station’s strategic plan and initiatives.
  • Provides communication, marketing, social media and staff support before, during, and after HPR membership fund drives.
  • Creates and manages external media plans and placements.
  • Keeps informed on industry trends, including maintaining a relation with other public media national entities, including NPR, APM, PRI, and others.
  • Develops and implements corporate responses to listener/member queries, as necessary.
  • Tracks and reports on key performance indicators regarding communications, marketing, and digital platform growth.
  • Serves on the HPR Senior Staff Team, engaging in senior level conversations, meetings, and initiatives.
  • Maintains station photo, publication, and press archives.
  • Other duties as assigned by President and General Manager.
