Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide and here online. Each Friday afternoon, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization, event or topic that offers assistance to the disabled and most vulnerable in the community with All Things Considered local host Dave Lawrence. This week we’re learning about Honolulu Habitat for Humanity. Our guest is executive director Jim Murphy.
According to their website, Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry. They note that Habitat welcomes all people—regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other difference—to build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter. Modeled as a self-help housing program, it isn’t a give away, but a joint venture, with homeowner families required to invest 500 “sweat equity” hours into the construction of their home and other families’ homes. This reduces the cost of the house, increases the pride of ownership among family members, and generates stronger relationships in the community. They also do Brush With Kindness projects to do renovations to homes and add accessible accommodations, and offer classes at their re-store, which sells building supplies and home renovation material at competitive rates.
