It has been 97 years since Hawai'i's last Queen, Lili'uokalani, passed away, but her memory has been refreshed of late through community gatherings and a new edition of her memoir. HPR’sNoeTanigawa spoke with artist Meleanna Meyer about the gatherings she has been holding across the state, where community members read the Queen’s words and sing her songs.
Enjoy “He Lei He Aloha: The Legacies of Queen Liliuokalani” in its final free performance Thursday, 6pm, February 13th, at the Hawai’i State Library downtown. At 7:30, next door in the State Archives, the Hawai’i Historical Society will present newly discovered stories of Lydia K. Aholo, the Queen’s hanai daughter. The definitive new edition of Liliuokalani’s memoir is available at Native Books, the Hawai’i Historical Society, and other booksellers, as well through UH Press.
